The direct interview strategy probably won't work. A clever reporter might be able to use e-mail to tease out some details. I think doing the story with context, as bit like here where they include the reminder about Douglas MacArthur are useful, but I'd like to see an interactive piece on war reporters and top brass to help those who weren't born during the Viet Nam War, much less the Korean War or WWII to develop an idea of the realities of working with the military as a reporter.
